Lily, is the best of me in you, I hope it's true Are your mother's eyes two sparkling jewels for you? Innocent and wonderful lovely child It's a joy to hold you and see you smile Lily, open up your eyes and see the big blue world Sing and find my heart and watch my love unfurl Lily I've just got one request: give me armfuls of lilies Been waiting all this time for you They say that beauty lives in lilies I guess that might sound silly But I could never make that up I guess it's just my luck Lily Lily, we'll give you every chance to make it through And when you've grown you'll know this feeling too Lily I've just got one request: give me armfuls of lilies Been waiting all this time for you |

"A New Father's Song (Lily)" I wrote this song about my grandniece, starting almost five years ago, before she was born, as soon as her father told me the baby would be a girl and nicknamed "Lily." I wrote from the perspective of her father, fretting whether she'll get his good qualities (not that he has any actual bad qualities). All the music came in a few hours, but I struggled for lyrics. Only the first two lines, and the fact that each verse begins with "Lily," came easily. I put it aside, forgot about it for a while. Last fall, determined to finish the song before the child graduated college, I stumbled across a (translated) phrase from Virgil, "... give me lilies by the armful...." I changed the line to "Give me armfuls of lilies" and this one line brought all the other lines for three verses and a bridge within a few hours. I liked the completed song so well that I decided to record it professionally, which inspired this whole project of recording an album of my original songs. The piano trills and fiddle solo are especially darling, no? |
